POWERS / ABILITIES
  • Disguise magic She can change her appearance (including clothing), physiology, and language capabilities to fit in with her surroundings. On Earth, she is using the guise Ginga Natsumi (銀河夏美).
  • Energy draining Rather than eating, she absorbs energy from those around her. Unfortunately, she also loses energy very abruptly and can't always tell when she's about to run out, resulting in collapses. She can also run a bidirectional energy feed to/from the Makaiju, which is often necessary due to how poorly she retains energy. She typically needs to feed from the Makaiju's energy daily to avoid a worse collapse.
  • Cardians Although she can't summon Cardians due to not playing the flute that Ail has mastered, she works with them and knows them, and they in turn know her.
  • Teleportation When she is fully energized, she can teleport up to 10km.
  • Telepathic link This link is exclusive to her relationship with Ail, likely as a result of the close bond they've fostered throughout their lives and their positive relationship with the Makaiju.
PERSONALITY & GOALS

It's safe to say that An's emotional maturity is ill-developed even for a teenager. She's selfish, self-centered, and jealous to say the least, in addition to vain, territorial, and not tending toward introspection. By human standards, she's also practical to a fault, seeing humans as little more than energy cattle and possessing no patience for useless frivolities such as poetry.

That said, An is not all petty jealousy and hostility. She's capable of deep loyalty and love, which is what brought her to the attention of her parent tree in the first place. The bond that she and Ail formed in their youth and maintained as time went on despite war ravaging the planet around them was precisely what the Makaiju wanted and needed, both to maintain itself and for her own good. An is capable of great bravery and self-sacrifice, although she doesn't know it; she would be the first to say she wouldn't sacrifice her own comfort for anyone. Then again, this may well be tied to the aforementioned avoidance of introspection: having lost nearly all of their fellow sibling-friends (they were all children of the Makaiju, so the two notions were one and the same), she refuses to think too deeply on exactly how much she needs Ail in her life.

Romance has never really been on An's radar. Growing up surrounded by war with only Ail and the Makaiju itself for comfort, she's never had a chance to dwell on the notion or had to address anything resembling attraction. Friends are also out of the picture. To An, humans are a resource, not an ally or companion. She has Ail for that; why would she need more? That said, she's also irrepressibly drawn to the culture of humans, enjoying (some of) their music, fashion... and all right, maybe their men, too. Specifically, one Chiba Mamoru, who possesses a kindness she hasn't seen in anyone except Ail. Not that most people would be quick to consider Ail kind. Then again, they don't know him the way An does... and if she has her way, they never will.

HISTORY

An was in the final crop of children the Makaiju gave life to. Following their births, the tree ceased producing more young, driven to reserve its energy as the people waged war with each other over the limited resource of its energy. Once the final war had passed and most of the children had perished, the Makaiju collected its select few remaining children and crossed the universe in search of a new home where the Makai would hopefully find safety and learn to love and generate the right sort of energy again.

... Of course, young An couldn't begin to understand this. All she'd ever known growing up was the pain of watching nearly everyone you knew jealously hurt and kill each other, stomping all over their brothers and sisters in an effort to claim energy for themselves. On the positive side, this taught An to be a fighter and survivor; on the downside, it also taught her that the way of the world was jealousy and hate and that life was cheap. The only reprieve from these life lessons was Ail, her brother, her partner, her best friend, her teammate and better half. They worked together and protected each other, and this relationship was what taught An how to love and how to be loyal. This relationship was what gave the Makaiju hope that not all her children were lost.

They traveled, and they traveled. And when they were done traveling, they traveled some more. Ultimately, they wound up on Earth. Ail and An were briefly separated, and An encountered another lost brother: Fiore. It would take a while for An and Ail to trust Fiore, but when he healed the Makaiju, that trust would be solidified.

While the development of their relationship with Fiore was going on, An and Ail were developing human relationships of their own under their respective guises as Natsumi Ginga and Seijuro Ginga. An met Sailor Neptune—much to her ill health, and Ail's great ire. An also met, and quickly fell for, Mamoru. An also met Usagi in school—the only one left at Azabu Juuban after Ami went off to Mugen and Makoto stopped attending—and other than wanting to take her energy, she quickly came to dislike the bubbly blonde, who was practically the antithesis of everything An was.

Unfortunately, Ail was forming bonds of his own, and the main one was for none other than Usagi. It took no time at all for a fiercely jealous An to decide that Usagi needed to be drained of all her beautifully potent energy. The Makaiju deserved it more than she did.

An's trust in Fiore was challenged when she realized that Fiore was irrationally attached to none other than her Mamoru. Not realizing the depth of Ail's distaste for the handsome earthling, An focused her hatred on anyone and everyone who might occupy Mamoru's attention more than she did: Usagi, Fiore, and who is this Michiru chick?!
